About the Keweenaw PeninsulaLocated in the northwestern portion of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Keweenaw Peninsula is surrounded on three sides by Lake Superior, the largest fresh-water lake in the world. A canal cuts through the Keweenaw Peninsula, opening into Portage Lake. This area, sometimes called Copper Country, was once home to a number of copper mining boom towns. Our country's newest national park, Keweenaw National Historical Park, is helping to preserve the history of copper mining here--a history which began, by the way, several thousand years ago when Native Americans mined for copper and traded copper from this area throughout the Americas. Want to visit or maybe even move here? The Keweenaw Peninsula Chamber of Commerce web site has more information. About the CameraThese photographs were captured with the Nikon 990, a digital camera that can record images as large as 2048 x 1536, which translates into more than 3 million pixels! That many pixels makes for very high quality web graphics when the image is reduced in size, and it supports the creation fairly large, high quality prints (10" x 7.5" at 200dpi). About the PhotographerUnless otherwise noted, these photographs are by (who else?) me--Constance Petersen. See my bio for more information. |
